In October 1985, Norma and Mike Delano opened The Country House in Snow Hill, Maryland. Mike was a former agricultural fertilizer salesman, while Norma was a second-grade teacher who quit teaching in 1972 to be a mom to Christy and Jenny. As the girls grew older, Norma became more involved in painting and sewing crafts, and she and Mike participated in craft shows each year. The idea of opening a store to showcase their handmade products and decorative items not readily available in the area led them to establish The Country House in Snow Hill.

Due to the overwhelming response at their Snow Hill store, the Delanos decided to move to a larger space in Salisbury, Maryland. After a year, they doubled the size of the Salisbury location to 5,000 square feet. Three years later, they purchased their current location, a 48,000-square-foot building that had originally been constructed in the 1930s as a shirt factory. The family, including grandparents and several carpenter friends, invested significant effort to prepare the building for their store.

In the early 2000s, The Country House Collection had the opportunity to develop a line of fabric curtains and linens, which were manufactured in India. Christy and Jenny worked alongside Norma and Mike to build this collection, which has since expanded to include a wide selection of metal pieces and other household goods.
